Richard was born on October 7, 1930 to Robert Lowell and Viola Elizabeth (Plummer) Ward, in Maple City, Kansas. He went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ Our Savior on August 13, 2014.
Richard grew up in Kansas. In 1946, when he was 17 years old, he and his his family moved to Lebanon, Oregon. He attended Lebanon High School, where he graduated in 1947.
In 1950 he enlisted in the Navy where he served on the USS Blue, and the USS McKean, as a boilerman during the Korean War. He received several Medals of Honor during his 4 years of service.
In 1949 he met the love of his life, and his future wife, Donna Rose Rea. They wed on December 6, 1952.
He attended Oregon State University, majoring in Automotive Engineering. From there he worked for several years in automotive sales, and also sold real estate. He worked for the State of Oregon as a heavy equipment mechanic, he retired after 17 years. After retirement he owned and operated, along with his wife, Richard Ward Motors. In 1997 he fully retired. He spent his retirement traveling with his wife in their motorhome, camping, commercial fishing, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Donna. His children, Conda Walsh (Steve), Debra Padgett (Randy), James Ward, Renee Ralls (Howard), and Susie Hyer (David). 16 Grandchildren, and 32 Great Grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his Father Robert, Mother Viola, Sister Barbara Chance, Great Granddaughter Tayah Jordan Ward, and Great Grandson Blake Evan Hyer.

Memorial services were held at Keizer Chapel in Keizer, Oregon on August 15, 2014. Full military services, will be held at The Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon, on October 7, 2014.
