Philip “Phil” Barry Coons
April 16, 1956 – February 11, 2022
Phil Coons, a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, died suddenly on February 11,
2022, at his home in Keizer, Oregon.
The sixth of eight children, Phil was born in Salem, Oregon to Donald and Elizabeth Coons. He attended
St. Vincent de Paul Grade School, Waldo Middle School, McNary High School and Chemeketa Community
College where he earned his associates degree.
After high school, Phil proudly joined the United States Marine Corp and was stationed in the
Philippines, where he served for three years before being honorably discharged.
Known in his community for a rare gift in mechanical operations, Phil was self-employed and devoted to
his business, OPE Engines, in Salem for many years.
Phil adored his two grandchildren, instilling his love for outdoor activities, which brought him great joy.
He lived life to the fullest and his sense of adventure was fueled by fishing, boating, duck hunting and
attending concerts, especially Bob Dylan and Tom Petty at The Gorge. He loved a good barbecue, taking
care of his lawn and gardening.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Elizabeth Coons; brother, Harold; sister, Mary Jane;
and brother, Peter (Kim).
In addition to his wife Rhonda, Phil is survived by his children; daughter, Kelsey (Antonio); sons, Sean
and Evan; grandchildren, Royce and Laylah; brothers, Donald (Linda) and Patrick (Mary); sisters, Victoria
and Breta; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Phil’s life at St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Friday,
March 25, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.
