Leonardo "Sonny" Ortiz Jr.
Salem - Sonny was born August 11, 1963 in Bay City, MI to Leonardo Sr. and Lidia Ortiz. He passed away April 6, 2013, surrounded by his family.
Sonny lived in Salem all his life attending Kennedy Elementary, Whitaker Junior High and graduating from McNary High School where he played the saxophone and cello. After high school he attended Oregon State University where he received an Associates Degree. He then attended Chemeketa Community College where he received certification as a paramedic and went to work for Marion County Fire District. Sonny changed careers and went to work for the Marion County Health Department where his variety of skills allowed him to work in several departments. His most recent position was working as a counselor for MMR children. In November of 1991 Sonny married "Melly" G. Ortiz. In 1996 they adopted their son, Justin G. Ortiz, and in 2003 they adopted their daughter, Katrina E. Ortiz. Sonny took early retirement for medical reasons. During his time with Marion County Sonny also sat on the Board of Directors for Charriots and started Bravo Security with friends. Sonny was very involved with the Hispanic community through church activities and working with the Salem-Keizer School District and was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church.
Sonny loved music and loved to dance. He enjoyed all things outdoors -fishing, hunting, camping and golfing. He loved spending time with friends and family, always looking for a reason to celebrate, and was a diehard Beavers and Cowboys fan.
Sonny is survived by his mother, Lidia Ortiz; son, Justin Ortiz; daughter, Katrina Ortiz; aunts Priscilla Mendoza and Alice Rojas; uncles, Joe Mondoza and Hisrael Ortiz; and numerous cousins. His father, Leonardo Sr., preceded him in death in November of 2010 and his wife, Melly, preceded him in death in October of 2012.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm Thursday at Keizer Funeral Chapel. Memorial mass Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Edward Catholic Church followed by a reception in the Parrish Hall.
