Leonard Schmaltz
April 16, 1925 - April 11, 2016
Salem - Born April 16, 1925 to John and Agness Schmaltz in Mount Angel, Oregon, Leonard passed away at Salem Hospital on April 11. He rejoined his wife, Leona, on her 88th birthday. She preceded him in death on November 19, 2015.
They married on February 8, 1947 in Mount Angel and were together for nearly 69 years. Leonard moved to Keizer in 1932. He was a lifelong farmer, although he held a variety of jobs over the years. He became a full-time farmer around 1968, growing many different crops in the Keizer area.
In 1990, Leonard and Leona moved to the Hazel Green farm where he continued to farm marionberries and filberts because at 65 he "just wasn't ready to hang it up yet". They spent the rest of their lives in their home there.
In his later years, Leonard enjoyed watching his neighbors at work in their fields while riding around on his Mule (Kawasaki UTV).
Leonard is survived by his 10 children and their spouses: Sharon (Larry dec'd) Karlin of Lincoln, KS; Marilyn (Robert) Faler of Salem, Betty (Paul) Simcoe of Stayton; Lawrence Schmaltz of Salem; Sandra (Bill) Apilado of Salem; David (Barb) Schmaltz of Newport, Kenneth (Joyce) Schmaltz of Salem; Steven (Cindy) Schmaltz of Salem; Brian Schmaltz of Salem; and Daryl (Tammy) of Silverton. He had 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Leonard was preceded in death by his sisters Rosie, Vicki, and his brothers Jack, Herbert, Norbert, and Dennis.
Visitation will be held at Keizer Mortuary on Monday the 18th from 4 to 7 PM. The rosary will be prayed at 9:30 AM on Tuesday the 19th at St Vincent De Paul Church in Salem. The funeral will follow at 10 AM.
