Leona Mary Schmaltz
April 11, 1928 - November 19, 2015
Leona Mary Schmaltz passed away at home surrounded by family members on November 19, 2015. Leona was born April 11,1928 in Mt. Angel Oregon to Joseph and Barbara Schaecher.
On February 8, 1947, Leona married Leonard R. Schmaltz at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mt. Angel. To their union 10 children were born.
Leona was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother & great-grandmother. Besides taking care of her family and home she partnered with her husband to make the farm a success. Often times she was seen standing on a 12-14 foot ladder picking fruit or crawling on her knees picking up filberts.
She loved her flower gardens, she sewed, baked the best pies and cinnamon rolls. Most of all, she loved to babysit her grandkids. Often she could be found in a rocking chair or patio swing holding the babies.
Leona is survived by her husband, Leonard, of almost 69 years, her 10 children & spouses: Sharon (Larry decd) Karlin of Lincoln, KS; Marilyn (Robert) Faler of Salem, Betty (Paul) Simcoe of Stayton; Lawrence Schmalz of Salem; Sandra (Bill) Apilado of Salem; David (Barb) Schmaltz of Newport, Kenneth (Joyce) Schmaltz of Salem, Steven A, (Cindy) Schmaltz of Salem; Brian Schmaltz of Salem and Daryl (Tammy) of Silverton, as well as 24 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren with one more on the way, and her former daughter-in-laws Dawn Schmaltz & Charlotte Bigger. Sisters Rosena Morgan of Dayton, Delores Brady of Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law, Larry Karlin; sisters-Gertrude Jacobsen & Rena Swartz; brothers, Wilbert, Norbert, Joseph & Clem Schaecher; niece, Janice Jacobsen; and nephew, Rob Schwartz.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St.Jude Children's Research Hospital in memory of Leona.
Services were held on Friday, November 27, 2015: viewing 8am to 8:30am; Rosary at 9am; Funeral Mass at St. Edwards Catholic Church at 9:30am. Luncheon after funeral with burial at 1:30pm in Mt. Angel's Mount Calvary Cemetery.
