Jose Garza (68) a resident of Keizer, Oregon passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024 after battling a 6 year illness. At the time of death, Jose was surrounded by his immediate family and children. Jose was born November 13, 1955 in Lovington, New Mexico to Federico and Magdalena Garza. Jose was one of 11 children. (6 boys and 5 girls). Jose married Edna Nora (Peña) Garza on July 3, 1976. He was a father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather and a friend to many.
The family followed the farmworker migrant trail in the early 1960s. They worked in the agricultural fields in Washington before settling in Woodburn and Gervais area. Jose attended school in Gervais. He obtained his G.E.D. at Chemeketa Community College and was a charter student at Colego Cesar Chavez in Mt. Angel, Oregon. He went to trade school to become a Welder. He enjoyed welding and held positions at different companies. During the construction boom in the late 1970s and 80s’, Jose entered the construction industry. He became a Drywaller (hanging sheet rock). He was very good at the job and was kept busy by many contractors and homeowner. In between welding and construction jobs, Jose would return to the agricultural fields to earn money to support his growing family.
Jose loved his family. His grandchildren were his joy. He had an assortment of hobbies such as reading the local Statesman Journal and filling in all the blanks of the daily crossword puzzles. He also played chess, and would listen to classic rock and roll on his radio. You always knew where you stood with Jose. He was honest and frank. He did not “sugar-coat” the reality of life. Jose will be missed by all those that loved him.
Jose is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister and his daughter Divina Arevalo. He is survived by 2 brother and 4 sisters, his wife Edna (Peña) Garza, and his children, Jose Ismael (Sonya) Garza, Rebecca Ester Garza, Sara Alicia Garza, Alexis Eliazar (Tonya) Garza, 15 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild and 2 more great-grandchildren on the way.
