KEIZER - Former Oregon resident Gale Alan Vaandering died August 8, 2012 at his home in Keizer, Oregon after battling cancer for two years. He spent his final weeks surrounded by family and friends whose lives he had touched during his sojourn on earth.
Gale was born August 26, 1948 to Henry and Alice Vaandering of Forest Grove, Oregon. He attended Forest Grove High School, graduating in 1966. Gale began his college education at Willamette University in the fall of 1966, studying business and political science. He took a three year break from college beginning in 1969 to serve his country as a member of the Army in Korea. While in Korea, Gale met and married Yoon Kyong Nam with whom he shared three years of marriage. He then returned to Willamette and graduated in the class of 1974 with honors. Gale devoted himself to his career at Norpac Foods. He began working there in 1972 and continued as a production manager until a month before his death. At Norpac, Gale met Susan Asher whom he married November 27, 1976.
Gale held an avid passion for the celebrations and big events of life. He reveled in birthday celebrations, weddings, and births. His Christmas decorations rivaled National Lampoon proportions. He loved sporting events, following every game of the Beavers, the Colts, and the Yankees with deafening cheers and commands to the players, who may or may not have been able to hear him through the television although his neighbors a few blocks away certainly could.
Gale is survived by five children, Jamie Vaandering, Jennifer Vaandering-Caples (husband Stan Caples), Alicia Vaandering (husband William Lundeen), Trevor Vaandering (wife Melody), and Kari Vasquez (husband Michael); and four grandchildren, Deandre Laurence, Jada Caples, Addison Vasquez, and Eden Vaandering. Additional survivors include Gale's mother, Alice Vaandering (Sazama); his sister, Linda Lance; and his brothers, John Vaandering and Mick Vaandering.
Gale was preceded in death by his wife Susan Vaandering (Asher) and his father Henry Vaandering.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Keizer Church of Christ in Keizer, Oregon on Saturday, August 25 at 2:00pm. Gale will be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Forest Grove, Oregon. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Charity Water.
