SALEM - Ben Hindman, beloved husband, father and friend passed away peacefully at the Irene Ford Care Center on January 15, 2012. Born on August 17, 1918 in Forsyth, Montana to Clarence and Rose Wiebush Hindman, he was the youngest of four sons.
He was raised during the depression of the 30's and when he was 17 he "rode the rails" to Washington looking for employment. He worked in the copper mines in Montana. In 193, Ben joined the U.S. Army and served in Hawaii until 1939. Following the completion of his enlistment, Ben came to Salem, Ore. and worked at Valley Packing as a meat cutter for his Uncle Jack Hindman. Ben was recalled into the Army in 1943 and served as an anti-tank gunner in the Phillippines and was discharged in 1946.
He returned to Salem and worked in construction. Later, he worked for Hammond Body Company building custom truck bodies. Five years later he started his own business on Portland Road in Salem, Ore., known as Hindman Trailer Rentals. He maintained his business for 23 years, retiring in 1978.
Ben married Ruth Thomas in 1939 and adopted her son Gary. Ruth passed away in 1983. He married Lucille Brakke in Mesa, Ariz. In 1984 and they spent many years together at Salem Town where they enjoyed golf and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and son, Gary.
Ben is survived by his wife Lucille (Brakke) Hindman, son Terry Fristad and wife Kay and daughter Michelle Guentner.
At Ben's request there will be no formal services.
