Albert C. Miller "Big Al", 68 of Keizer died suddenly in his home February 16. He was born in Eugene Oregon on April 6th 1947 to Harold and Patricia Miller. The first of three children he had two sisters Judy Piper (John) and Ann Whittaker.
Al grew up in South Eugene. He graduated from South Eugene High School and went on to attend the University of Oregon, Eastern Oregon University, and Willamette Law School.
A letterman and member of the "Order of the O", Al played Football and Baseball at the University of Oregon. He transferred to Eastern Oregon University his senior year in order to focus solely on baseball. He is a member of the EOU Sports Hall of Fame (1970 championship baseball team). He was drafted to the Philadelphia Phillies and spent 1 year pitching in the minor leagues on the Walla Walla farm team before attending Willamette Law School. He graduated from Willamette with his law degree in 1974.
Al was deeply involved in community life in and around Keizer for over 40 years. His father bought him his first Elks membership for his 21st birthday and he is a lifetime member. He served on the Keizer City Council for 8 years and was instrumental in bringing the Keizer Volcanoes to town. In 1980 he was voted Club President of the Year for all Active 20-30 clubs in western Canada, Washington, and Oregon. In 1982 he was voted the Active 20-30 International Outstanding Young Man of the Year and served as Vice President of the Oregon Chapter Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that same year. He opened his own law firm in 1979 and worked there until his death.
Outside of community life Al was a father to Lindsey Swinehart and Brock Miller and a friend to many. He loved to travel and spent many weeks fishing and hanging out in Cabo. He was an active outdoorsman and was proud to tell anyone who asked that he was an Eagle Scout. He created many fond memories with Brock and his friends up at deer camp each year and will be sorely missed next fall.
Al is survived by his daughter Lindsey Swinehart (Ben), son Brock Miller (Katie), granddaughters Ivy Swinehart and Cecilia Miller, grandsons Kellan Miller and Henry Swinehart, significant other Barb Cooney, and his beloved dog CharlieBill.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday March 6th at 5pm at the Keizer Elks Lodge. We ask that all attendees wear their Oregon Duck gear in honor of our father.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Al's name to the Oregon Duck Athletic Fund.
